Outside Gidea Park station‚ which will be the terminus for Shenfield‚ lay a typical small suburban parade of shops with one or two boarded up and generally looking rather down at heel.

The council (London Borough of Havering) realised action was needed and designed a very simple but wonderfully effective scheme. Paved primarily with red-grey granite‚ a band of green runs between the trees. Simple but good detailing of kerbs‚ tree pits and improved lighting completed the design.

Within weeks of completion‚ all the shops were occupied and their frontages clean and tidy. With the improved streetscape in front‚ it was now clearly worth their while to ensure their properties were up to standard. This simple and economic scheme sets a very good benchmark indeed.
