Gold Medal, Best Fresh Garden
A contemporary scheme that re-defines urban outdoor design, City Living is a great concept for any high-rise city apartment block. Showing how typical square buildings can be easily transformed with the use of green outdoor spaces, City Living incorporates hardy, tropical and shade-tolerant plants, sheltered seating areas and calming water features together into one concept.
Set across different levels with a mezzanine floor, the garden includes a stairwell with cantilevered steps and perforated metal screen. Light filters down to the lower levels so that each area can be gardened and utilised for creation. Green walls and water features are combined with contemporary orange and grey textiles to create a stylish space that merges in with its surroundings.
Showcasing a variety of different materials and textures across the different levels, including wood decking, steel and textiles. Light-reflecting concrete was specially developed for one side wall, transforming it into an enchanting, twinkling design feature once the lights come on.
Continuing the modern patterns throughout the scheme, the design used custom-made hexagon EMPEROR Porcelain Paving tiles from the Urban range in Manhattan from CED Stone Group which were used to lay the floor on the ground level. Chosen for its suitability for cutting tight hexagons using water jet technology, and its mid-toned grey colour, it was a perfect choice to use as a neutral yet contemporary tile for the striking geometric pattern.
Silver Grey Ganite Aggregates from CED were used around some of the planting and Polished Black Pebbles were submerged within the water features to create a natural effect.

Kate was encouraged by her parents to garden from a young age. What started out as simple hobby grew into a successful lifelong career. Kate Gould Gardens was started in 1998 out of Kate’s bedroom. 20 years and 5 Chelsea gold medals later, Kate is one of the most sought after garden designers in London.
But she hasn’t forgotten where it all began. It’s very likely you’ll still find her with her hands in the dirt, installing the latest exquisite planting scheme she has dreamt up. It’s this warmth and approachability that gives her the ability to work along with her clients. This, coupled with her passion, experience and strength of visualisation, is a tried and tested combination that yields beautiful results every time.
