Drakkar’s Drift is inspired by the dramatic basalt columns of Fingal’s Cave on the uninhabited island of Staffa, an interest first sparked by a 2023 visit that grew into deeper exploration of the island’s geology and Norse connections. The name ‘Drakkar,’ referring to Viking longships crowned with dragon heads, evokes the arrival of Norse seafarers to Scotland’s northern isles more than a millennium ago.
The garden celebrates Scotland’s historic ties with Scandinavia by weaving together Nordic wellness traditions and Highland character. A floating timber boardwalk guides visitors toward a bespoke Heartwood Sauna and plunge pool, while a rocky cascade, meandering stream, and carefully placed boulders recall the rugged drama of Scottish landscapes.
CED Stone Group supplied the Gabbro Boulders and Scottish Beach Pebbles used throughout the scheme, as well as the large Saltire feature boulder that anchors the garden’s identity.
A fire pit adds a nod to a more elemental way of living, encouraging moments of gathering, reflection, and community. The result is a serene yet culturally layered retreat that harmonises heritage, craftsmanship, and the restorative power of nature.
