CED Stone Group Embarks on New Chapter with Strategic Relocation

Post date: 11 Aug, 2025

We are excited to announce the completion of our relocation of the London East - West Thurrock depot and Head Office. This transition marks the end of nearly 100 years of the family business operating from this historic chalk quarry. The Walley family has proudly been part of the stone industry since the mid-1800s. In 1931, we relocated our main flint business to Thurrock, and in 1978, we evolved into CED. From our humble beginnings to becoming the highly-regarded company we are today, each generation has adapted and grown with the times, and we will continue to do so.

Our new Head Office and Commercial Division headquarters are now located in Rochford. This facility will accommodate our Commercial Division, laboratory facilities, a sample hub and Head Office administration teams. Strategically situated near Southend Airport, it provides excellent connectivity for our customers, partners, and employees, facilitating both national and international collaboration.

Our depot team has moved to Vange Park in Basildon. Its strategic location next to the A13 will help us overcome logistical challenges, allowing us to avoid the notorious traffic congestion on local roads adjacent to the M25 and Dartford Crossing. Additionally, this site will provide excellent access to Kent and the South Coast once the new Lower Thames Crossing opens. It is also conveniently located closer to the Port of London and the Tilbury container port, enhancing our operational capabilities and streamlining our logistics.

MD Giles Heap states,

Moving from a site that has been operational since the 1930s, where we had a stockyard filled with more types of natural stone than probably any other company in the UK, was no small feat. However, David Smith, Howard White, and the entire team from our London East (West Thurrock) depot have risen to the challenge admirably. I couldn't be prouder of them, and I am genuinely excited to see what they can achieve from their new depot!

Operations Director - Howard White adds,

Opening a new purpose-built depot while keeping the business running and moving thousands of tonnes of products was a daunting task. However, with careful planning, a top-notch team, and excellent hauliers and suppliers, we completed the move on time. All the depots and staff played a part by accepting extra stock; it was truly a company-wide effort. This makes me very proud to be part of such a team-oriented organization.

These two new sites represent a thoughtful and positive move that aligns with our long-term goals of innovation, efficiency, and sustainability. Our commitment to providing exceptional service and fostering strong business relationships remains unchanged. Thank you for your continued support as we embark on this new chapter.
